Devil's Tower National Monument
Though our stint in Wyoming would be brief on our westward journey, it was well worth the time. After setting up camp in the town of Moorcroft, we headed north to visit Devil’s Tower National Monument.
For anyone who saw Steven Spielberg’s movie “Close Encounter of the Third Kind”, you’ll recognize the formation that stands almost 900’ from base to summit and almost a mile above sea level. The hiking trails that surround the butte offered majestic views of the valleys below, well not quite as good as the view the climbers had as they scaled the tower’s walls. Yikes!!!
There are several versions of how this massive igneous rock was formed and shaped, ranging from scientific studies to native lore. Frankly, we like the one that involved the huge, angry grizzly bear that caused the deep, vertical striations in a fit of rage!
That rock didn’t look very big until you took the pic further back. Holy jumpin! I’m with you on the rock climbing. No way you get me doing that. Yeah I’m good with feet planted on firm ground. WOW! By the tan on your face Dawn, looks like the weather has been nice.
ReplyDeleteGlad I wasn’t around when the bear made those marks. That must have been one very large bear.
