Finding Fortune In Winterset, Iowa

Our decision to stay at the City Campground & Park in Winterset, Iowa was an arbitrary choice made primarily because Bentley had acres of field to run and play in.  It was dumb luck, however, that we came across John Wayne’s (Marion Robert Morrison) birthplace home and museum. If that wasn’t enough, we also found out “The Bridges of Madison County” with Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep was filmed here and we had a great time locating all six covered bridges. As we navigated our way throughout the corn fields to find the bridges, we realized why all the vehicles in this area were covered with dirt. Our truck may never look the same!





























As for those corn fields, they’re everywhere here in Iowa and as we all know Brad in corn fields is not a good thing😊

    Bentley looks so happy running. Definitely a great choice to stay. How wonderful to not be on a schedule! Oh man I wouldn’t dare get in those cornfields. At my height I’d be lost forever. 😜😱

With a break in the weather, we continued our journey across middle America passing thru the “Land of Lincoln” and crossing over the Mighty Mississippi. We imagined what it would be like to paddle our Minnesota II canoe on it someday…Yikes! Our westerly trek brought us to Amana, Iowa, where we planned to relax and enjoy the holiday. With the temps still in the 90’s, Bentley opted to catch up on some ZZZZZZ’s in the IBEX while we made our way north to Cedar Rapids. Years ago, Dawn’s Dad played minor league baseball as a pitcher in this area. It was here her Mom and Dad were married and the rest is history. We had great fun tracing back to where it all began.
